Engetsu Carolina Lefevre – creator
I was born in São Paulo, Brazil, where I studied architecture and worked with graphic design and illustration. I have exhibited my art in group shows at some of the high profile museums of Sao Paulo, including MASP (Art Museum of São Paulo) and MAC (Museum of Contemporary Art).
I started my Zen practice in 2006, continuing to explore the connection between Zen and Art. In 2013 I traveled in the USA, visiting various Zen Centers. I lived at SFZC’s City Center/Beginner’s Mind Temple from 2014 to 2015, at Tassajara from 2016 to 2018, and since last November I have been the Ino (head of the meditation hall) at City Center.
Since my first sitting I felt the connection between my experience of meditating and creating art. I have explored this relationship through Zazenhos (Zen + Desenhos), Portuguese for Zen + Drawing. I began this process in Brazil, with events in the temple or in urban public spaces, where people would practice zazen and drawing. I am dedicated to finding ways to continue creating my art in the midst of her full schedule at City Center.
Elliot Shonin Charney is a resident at City Center, Beginner’s Mind Temple and works in the Business Operations department for SFZC. Elliot received jukai in 2014 in the Boundless Way Zen lineage and moved into City Center in 2017 to begin practicing in the way of Shunryu Suzuki Roshi. He was the Head Chiden (the head of altar care) since shortly after moving in, and did that for almost two years.
